What is Your Birthday Flower?

Each of us has a birthstone depending on when we were born and you may be surprised to find out we each have a birthday flower as well. Flowers are an extremely popular birthday gift and the present will even mean more if you choose the flowers that go with the month in which the recipient was born.

The birthday flower for January is the carnation. Available in a wide variety of colors, the carnation is a symbol of freshness and is considered ideal for the start of a new year. It is also said to represent beauty, pride and admiration.

February’s flower is the Iris. The Iris is a symbol of faith and wisdom. The flower itself is tall and elegant with large blooms of purple flowers. In Greek, iris means rainbow and in ancient days was seen as the link between heaven and earth.

The birthday flower for March is the daffodil. The bright yellow daffodil is usually the first sign of the arrival of spring in most parts of the U.S. and is perfect for the third month of the year. The daffodil is a symbol or rebirth and new beginnings.

April’s flower is the daisy. The daisy has become a symbol of innocence and playfulness. Just as spring provides a rebirth, the daisy has come to represent child like exuberance.

The birthday flower for May is the lily. It has become a symbol of innocence long associated with the Virgin Mary. The flower represents purity and honor.

June’s flower is the rose. The classic symbol of love and romance, the rose is in full bloom as summer starts. While individual colors of roses carry different meanings, the flower itself is a symbol of beauty and perfection.

The birthday flower for July is the Delphinium. The tall flower is packed with small purple blossoms that are seen as a symbol of an open heart.

August’s flower is the gladiola. This is another large flower with a long stem. Gladiola comes from the Latin word for sword and is a symbol of strength.

The birthday flower for September is the Aster. The small flowers come in a variety of bold colors and it has come to symbolize elegance.

October’s flower is the marigold. It was chosen for October because of its autumn colored shades of gold. It is a symbol of grace.

The birthday flower for November is the Chrysanthemum. It is recognized as a symbol of optimism and happiness.
