The Tradition Giving Fathers Day Gifts Throughout the World
The Tradition Giving Fathers Day Gifts Throughout the World
By Rosie P Richards
The tradition of having a special day each which is dedicated to fathers is a custom which is upheld in many different countries. In the UK fathers day is always celebrated on a Sunday as this historically was the only day of the week when the majority of fathers did not go to work. This tradition is still celebrated each year and although many fathers now work on a Sunday the day remains as always being on a Sunday.
There are a number of different theories as to why and when the tradition began. In the Roman Catholic church the day is associated with the Feast of St. Joseph on March 19th, however for many countries the days have become separated.
Fathers day in America is celebrated on the third Sunday in June with a couple of variations as to how the tradition began. One train of thought believes that the day was established as remember for fathers who were tragically killed in a mining accident, while others believe it was instigated by Mrs Dodd who was raised by her father after the death of her mother.
In Thailand fathers day is celebrated in December this year, with the tradition of giving a Canna flower as this is believed to be a masculine flower and therefore the most appropriate. The people of Thailand will also wear yellow on fathers day as a sign of respect for the king and also because yellow is the colour of Monday in Thailand and this was the day the king was born.
There are many other countries who celebrate fathers day for different reasons and traditions, however the common theme among them all is that the day is dedicated to giving fathers gifts as well as the day being spent together as a family.
Commercialisation is believed to have taken over as many companies promote cards which are especially produced for fathers day along with a wide choice of different gifts.
In the UK cards and gifts are given to fathers of all ages, as such selecting the ‘right’ gift can pose quite a problem for some people, more especially in today’s modern world where most fathers have the material items they need such as electrical items, tools and buts and pieces for their cars.
As such people are steering away from giving material items and instead giving their father experience days which are recreational as well as pleasurable. There are wide choices of very unique experiences available which have been designed to suit fathers of all ages, tastes and personal activities which dads aspire to being able to participate in.
Sports associated days are among the most popular, where dads can either take part in a particular sport or experience some daring once in a life type dreams, such as driving a Ferrari or Lamborghini.
With many diverse and unusual experiences to choose from there is the ideal ‘alternative’ fathers day gift which children of any age can surprise their father with this year!
