Trooping the Colour and the Queen’s Birthday - A Great British Spectacle!

Trooping the Colour and the Queen’s Birthday - A Great British Spectacle!
By Christopher Auriol

What is Trooping the Colour?

The actual Trooping the Colour ceremony dates back to the 17th century, though the origins of this tradition go back hundreds of years beyond that too.

It’s a military tradition and is linked to the fact that different regiments have different colours, flags or insignias to differentiate them from each other. When going in to battle the flag or colours would be paraded, or trooped, around the soldiers so that they could see and recognise the colour of their regiment and know where to go when in battle. After the battle was fought the colours would be trooped around again to show the soldiers that the regiment was still intact.

The ceremony that takes place today is largely just ceremonial but it’s very important to both the British Army and the current Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II. Since 1748 Trooping the Colour has also been used to celebrate the Official Birthday of the King or Queen of Great Britain. This day in June was chosen back then as it was hoped it would be a nice summer day that all the people could enjoy!

What will you see at Trooping the Colour?

The Trooping the Colour and Queen’s Birthday involves a parade of 1,400 officers and men, including 400 musicians, and 200 horses. They all march and drum their way from Buckingham Palace down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Parade in Whitehall, where the Queen enters and does her Inspection. After the actual Trooping the Colour ceremony and the Royal Salute they all leave Horse Guard’s Parade and make their way back down The Mall ending up back at Buckingham Palace. The Queen then joins the rest of the Royal Family up on the famous balcony of the Palace and there’s a spectacular flypast by the Royal Air Force.

You can stand almost anywhere along the wide avenue that’s called The Mall and see the parade go by both times. On the return you should get a good look at the Queen herself! Tickets are not required for spectators to stand along The Mall or outside Buckingham Palace, but you do need tickets for the ceremony at Horse Guard’s Parade. These are allocated via a ballot in March each year, and you have to apply by letter in January and February to get tickets for Trooping the Colour 2010. Keep an eye on the Official Website of the British Monarchy for instructions on applying for tickets in 2011.

Visiting London for Trooping the Colour

With so many of London’s famous landmarks so close by you’d be silly not to make at least a weekend of your visit to London. Many of the city’s best hotels are very close by such as the famous The Ritz, and the May Fair, or choose one of the many hundreds of other hotels in London. Nearby attractions include Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, and some of the best London parks, so bring a picnic!

Fancy Birthday Cakes - ‘Rubble Cake’

Fancy Birthday Cakes - ‘Rubble Cake’
By Jenny Scarfe Beckett

There’s a certain amount of pleasure gained from making fancy birthday cakes that cost next to nothing. How? Not cheap ingredients! Make your fancy birthday cakes from the trimmings of other cakes.

There is inevitably some ‘fallout’ from making celebration cakes, particularly wedding cakes made of many layers. These cakes always need trimming and cutting into shape before they are glazed with chocolate.

• But what can you do with those delectable biscuity trimmings?

• What to do with the traces of ganache from the different fillings?

• What to do with the spare cake and cream left over from the cake shaping?

You can just eat it all, then and there, but that seems downright greedy - or throw it away, which seems downright wasteful… or you can make more brand new fancy birthday cakes!

Just after delivering a large wedding cake one year, to be honest I was a bit ‘caked out’! But my grandson wanted one of my ‘fancy’ birthday cakes. I needed something different, quickly.

I remembered that in my Grandmother’s time, bakers used to put all their cake ends and scrapings from the day’s production into a large bowl, together with any plain cake left unsold and a goodly slosh of alcohol. This was mixed, made into a large slab and sold next day in small slices as Tipsy Cake.

That set me wondering.

Could I do something similar for my grandson, but keep it alcohol-free, and also use up the spare ganache I had prepared for that wedding cake?

Yes! It was one of my most successful fancy birthday cakes, a 3D chocolate dinosaur.

The basic ‘construction material’ is now known in our family as Rubble Cake.

Rubble Cake is excellent for creating 3-dimensional detail. For larger cakes, use sponge layers and ganache for the main body of the shape, then rubble cake for the rest of the modelling. The shaped cake should be refrigerated at regular intervals to harden the chocolate in the mixture. Once the model is firm, more room-temperature rubble mixture can be added.

Rubble Cake: my original experiment (quantities are variable!)

  • I was using a mixture of fat-free sponge trimmings and leftovers already carrying some ganache and white chocolate mousse. I broke up all the cake into small pieces about the size of a walnut into a bowl.
  • I made sure the ganache was at room temperature (ie soft and slightly runny). I put it through the microwave for 20 seconds.
  • I added enough runny ganache to the cake morsels to just coat them. On stirring, the mixture was similar to very large breadcrumbs or crumble. (Drier than you might think.)
  • I covered the bowl with film and left it for about 30 minutes.
  • When I came back to it, all the sponge had softened, I gently stirred and broke it up with a metal spoon.
  • Then, using my hands I scooped up some of these ‘cooked cake crumbs’ and compressed them slightly. It formed a mouldable ball of ‘rubble’ like loose sticky dough.
  • I did the same with the rest of the cooked cake crumbs.

Note: exact results are unpredictable according to the original cake components. Remember that ‘less is more’ regarding the amount of ganache you add to the cake crumbs. Too sticky a mixture is difficult to work with. However, don’t panic if you do add too much ganache; just pop it in the fridge to chill slightly in order for it to harden before use.

Model at will!

As well as fancy birthday cakes, this same mixture makes good plain truffles if rolled into little balls and dusted with cocoa. It can be used as a base for cold chocolate mousse cake or can be used as one layer in a chocolate layer cake.

(Note: so successful was Rubble Cake that now the joke is on me. Instead of making Rubble Cake cakes from leftover trimmings I now have to bake new cakes to break up for my fancy birthday cakes…)

Jenny Scarfe Beckett has been cooking for friends, family and even complete strangers for fifty-five years. Over the last twenty years, Jenny has also been experimenting with chocolate in its various forms including ganaches, glazes, creams etc combined with simple sponge to create perfectly balanced chocolate recipes. The aim is to create gourmet chocolate ‘mouthfuls’ using very good ingredients so that less is definitely more.

Now, after ‘personal’ cookery for many years, she’s happy to share her recipes. Especially the ones that work.

Mini Birthday Cakes - Celebrate in Style!

Mini Birthday Cakes - Celebrate in Style!
By Barbara Neitzel

Cakes are delicious treats that everybody truly relishes and loves. A birthday is incomplete without a cake. Birthday cakes brighten up the birthday boy or girl’s party. Mini birthday cakes are just like regular birthday cakes except for the fact that they are available in smaller and cuter sizes. The baking process is the same for these little cakes as regular birthday cakes except for the size factor. Also, the required time in the oven will change a bit. The designs and shapes of miniature cakes vary. These cakes are great.

They can all be decorated the same or they can also be personalized. For small gatherings, it is even possible to monogram each cake with the recipient’s name. For kid’s parties, however, it is best to decorate all of the cakes with a design intended for the guest-of-honor. This will make him or her feel special.

There are many shapes you can choose from for your mini cakes. Mini birthday cakes can also be utilized as centerpiece decorations. They are small in size and can be made in the form of adorable designs such as a car, teddy bear, puppy, clown, doll, the shape of a heart and so on which will delight the kids, and the parents, at the birthday party. They will be one of the highlights of your kid’s birthday party. One innovation in using these little cakes is to have each of them inscribed with a particular guest’s name. This concept will make your guests feel truly special.

Imagine each child’s delight when you hand them their own little cake in a cute little box to take home. These cakes can be packed with colorful papers and ribbons to enhance their look. They serve as memorable souvenirs. The most popular flavors are chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and mini cheesecakes.

You can purchase mini cake pans in several different shapes. A mini cake pan will allow you to cook several at once. They are very affordable and can be used over and over for many different occasions. They can even be used to make interesting, single-serving jello designs!

When you are throwing a party for your child’s birthday, make sure you plan on serving mini birthday cakes. They will certainly be the talk of your party. Your guests will be talking about these little treasures to their friends and family for several days after the event.

{greatest Greater London Burlesque Cabaret Club For Birthday Party And Hen Night Groups|

{Greatest Greater london Burlesque Cabaret Club for Birthday Party and Hen Night Groups| by Lawrence Peters

{Best Greater london Burlesque Cabaret Club for Birthday Party and Hen Night Groups|

Our pick of the cream of Greater london’s burlesque, cabaret and comedy scene for birthday and hen party groups.||What Greater london burlesque, cabaret and comedy club is preeminent for birthday or hen party groups|||}Review of Greater london’s top burlesque and cabaret clubs including CellarDoor, Madame Jojos, Peacock Bar, Pigalle’s and Vauxhall Tavern for a birthday party, hen party or other special occasion. Hints and advice on what to look out for.

London is suddenly awash with venues doing burlesque and cabaret but which ones are best for birthday parties and hen parties where not everyone is necessarily going to be a burlesque aficionado and where other factors like food, and whether there is a disco and dancing afterwards are going to be just as important.
For party groups heading to Greater london’s West End you cannot go wrong with Madame JoJos or Volupte. Whilst both venues are pricey they do have late licences for that all important bit of dancing after.. Madame Jojos as well as having great shows is an inspiring building with some excellent club nights too.. Volupte is also very much a sit down and eat kind of venue and can be a bit officey to say the least. On the more intimate tip is hosting some hot acts right now but it really is only big enough to swing a cat in and for a whole evening out might feel slightly claustrophobic. is hosting the excellent Tassel club on Fridays but otherwise is to avoided. All these venues by the way are pretty pricey. Bethnal Green Mens Working Club in London’s East End also hosts some great nights although the venue itself and their staff are very mediocre The food is abominable and lets just say the mixology revolution appears to have passed then by too. One to avoid. West and North London are pretty barren too when it comes to specialist burlesque and cabaret venues but Cobden Club and Proud Galleries do have some excellent one offs.
South London is the place where a lot of the newest talent is going with Peacock Bar and Banana Cabaret leading he way in particular. Peacock Bar has cleared up with its combination of burlesque comedy early followed by retro Djs after - all till 2am every Friday and Saturday Their Stars In Your Eyes program has also proved a big hit with birthday and hen partys South London is also the home for Banana Cabaret which remains resolutely popular despite regular price hikes and no review would be complete without mentioning the excellent Vauxhall Tavern (note gay venue).
Of the commercial comedy clubs Jongleurs and several of the Leicester square venues are a safe if not inspiring choice However it can be more fun to catch one of the many named comedians playing the smaller bar and club comedy circuit venues. This is often the finest way to get hear more cutting edge and fresh material.
So there we have it Greater london’s burlesque, comedy and cabaret scene from the inside. We hope you enjoyed it and will find it useful. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for more reviews from Burlesque Insider Also if you have any suggestions let me know.

7 Fun Ways To Celebrate Birthdays In Your Classroom

7 Fun Ways to Celebrate Birthdays in Your Classroom by Jennifer Dobson

If you have an elementary school classroom, then you likely have twenty-or-so birthdays coming up this school year - and each of them represents a great motive for having some fun with your students. Let’s look at some fun ways to celebrate birthdays in your classroom this year.

1. Crowning the birthday boy or birthday girl. Purchase a small crown that is designated as the birthday crown, and a banner that reads “birthday girl” or “birthday boy” for the child to wear for the entire day. You can also create a birthday king or queen chair cover and allow the child to have privileges associated with his title, like leading the classroom to lunch and recess.

2. Treats for the class. Provide a small treat for the entire class, along with a beverage like a juice box.

3. Journal assignment. On each child’s birthday, have all of his or her classmates write about the things (minimum of three) that they like about the child who is having a birthday. Combine the lists to create a web on the board, and leave the web their all day so that the child will know how valued they are.

4. Provide a free homework pass. This is a great gift for the birthday child. Create an official homework pass that they can use throughout the week on the subject of their choice.

5. Birthday keepsakes. Have each classmate make a birthday card, birthday book, or birthday poster that is chock-full of positive thoughts, pictures, and etc., about the birthday child. Simple supplies like stickers, glitter and colored markers are all that you will need for this fun classroom project to celebrate birthdays.

6. Donate a favorite book. Before school begins each year, purchase some inexpensive children’s books and keep them in a special box. When the birthday arrives, allow the birthday child to select one book to donate either to the classroom library or school library - complete with a bookplate announcing the donation. Have the child explain to the class why he or she chose the book, and allow them to be the first one to read it, of course.

7. Birthday singing telegram. Work with several students in secret to create a birthday singing telegram for the birthday child to be delivered at a specific time during the day, optimally when the child least expects it.

These are just a few suggestions for making each of your students birthdays a bit more memorable. You can come up with other creative birthday celebration ideas on your own that are age appropriate for your classroom.

Celebrating Summer Birthdays

Many kids don’t have their birthdays fall within the school calendar year, so a summer birthday party held just a few weeks after school goes back into session is a great icebreaker activity. Find out which children had birthdays over the summer and plan a massive birthday party just for those children, complete with treats and games.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday

A very fun activity that can also promote your student’s love of reading is to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which falls on March 2nd. Schools across the country often plan activities to honor the birth of this beloved children’s author, and if your school has nothing planned - then you can start the tradition yourself. Some activities to consider:

- A ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ breakfast. A bit of green food coloring can turn this breakfast into a Seuss-style buffet that you can serve right in the classroom; be sure to read the famous book by the same title while the kids munch away.

- ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’ fishing tournament. Laminate fish that have the numbers one and two on them, and also some red fish and blue fish. Attach magnets to the back. Fashion fishing rods from pencils and string with a magnet attached at the end. Place the fish in a small plastic swimming pool and go fish!

- ‘Cat in the Hat’ hat decorating contest. Run off some copies of the Cat in the Hat’s hat - which is very easy to draw. Provide “google” eyes, glitter, macaroni, cotton balls, markers, crayons, and more for the kids to decorate their hats. Have another teacher judge the entries - and give the winner a copy of the ‘Cat in the Hat’.

Jennifer Dobson invites you to visit her favorite online teacher store, MPM School Supplies. The website has an incredible selection of products including quality kids rugs, and it donates 50% of the gross profits to children’s charities!

Clutter and Hoarding - How to Organize Your Birthday Card Mailouts

Clutter and Hoarding - How to Organize Your Birthday Card Mailouts
By Beverly E Taylor

Did you promise yourself that you would get more organized when it comes to mailing out birthday cards and other special occasion cards? Do you sometimes struggle with your social networking regarding family and friends? You sometimes struggle to keep in touch with your customers?

Doing your social networking is an important thing for you to do to maintain happy, meaningful relationships. There’s an easy way to stay organized and let people know you are thinking of them. The following four simple ideas can help you organize your social networking to stay connected with loved ones.

1. In November or December, remember to get a new calendar. Get a calendar that has large enough blocks in which to write information. Before the current year ends, write everybody’s birthday or special event date on your new calendar that is special to you. Because you have acted proactively, you’ll be ready for the new year. You help yourself by getting organized. And being organized, you even reduce your stress about staying in touch with your loved ones.

2. After you’ve purchased a new calendar, and have written the names of the people with the special events on your calendar, get out a piece of paper. Write out a shopping list of likes and dislikes of each person. Then, go to a card shop and purchase birthday cards either for the entire month or for the entire year depending upon your budget.

3. While you’re in the card shop, look at the different cards available. As you imagine each special person, look at a card, and then buy the cards that seem to suit that person. Buy all the cards that fit within your budget. Keep the cards in a special place so that you know where they are each time you go to mail out cards. You could even develop the habit of mailing out the cards at the beginning of the year. Some people’s cards will be late; some will be early. But at least they will all get them.

4. If you live on a limited budget, you can go to discount card shops. In many stores you can get two cards for one dollar. Sometimes you can buy packages of birthday cards. You can also buy packages of special event cards. There are ways to economically afford to continue on with your social networking. Staying in touch with your loved ones is a way we create happy memories. Go and mail out some happy memories today.

LEGO Party Ideas For a Kids Birthday Party

LEGO Party Ideas For a Kids Birthday Party
By Jillian Gallo

Lego Party Ideas… what child doesn’t love to play with Lego toys? When you are planning your next child’s birthday party why not take a look at Legos for your theme. You can find plenty of fun party supplies when Legos is the party theme. Lots of kids party games and even some easy ways to decorate that special Lego birthday cake.

When you are planning a child’s birthday idea, why not go for a themed one. Initially it may seem like there is more organizing but once you have an agenda, it is really simple. For example, most boys are into Lego in some way or another. It is a great toy for constructing all types of things, from houses to working models of cars or trains.

There are plenty of Lego party ideas to choose from. Lego covers so many different themes themselves you could find yourself having a Star Wars party with Lego Star Wars characters, that is a very popular Lego theme. Or go with a SpongeBob Lego theme, a Lego firetruck theme or a police party or even a beach party if you chose the Lego City Coastguard Theme. Whichever Lego Party Idea you chose, send out Legoville party invitations letting your party guests what your theme is. Themed invitations are one of the many items you can choose from Legoville party supplies.

As Lego is such a colorful theme, you can ask the guests to dress up in different colors like a costume. When they arrive offer to paint their face. You will obviously need to check that the child has no allergies and don’t paint over open cuts. Keep it simple i.e. have a different sponge for each color. Kids just love having their faces painted and they will not care that you are not Picasso. It will kick off the party on a great note.

You can carry on the color theme with the cake and the sandwiches. Using strips of colored icing will help make the cake look like Lego bricks. You can use layers of different colors jelly for deserts and food colorings will transform the plainest sandwich.

Lego party game ideas can be adapted to any of the themes you have chosen. For example, if you go for Star Wars you can play a variation of cops and robbers with one side being the dark side and the other Yoda’s team. If you have gone for a color theme i.e. face painting etc, you could use some balloon games. Favorites include Catch me where all the guests receive a balloon with their name on it. The idea is that they have to keep this balloon or any nearest one in the air until the music stops. Whoever doesn’t manage to keep the balloon floating is out.

If you want to have some relatively quiet time to calm the kids down, you could play draw the funny face on the balloon. The children pass around balloons and each person has to draw something for the face. So one draws the eyes, another draws the mouth and so on. Whoever pops the balloon is out and the last remaining child wins. You will obviously need a ready supply of balloons.

Use Lego party favor supplies to make up the contents of the party bags. You can buy individual packs of Lego that will have enough bricks to build one small item. Bubbles, crayons, coloring pages, temporary tattoos and stickers are always great for adding to the Lego party bags. Have lots of Lego fun with these Lego party ideas.
