Harry Potter Birthday Party Supplies For Your Little Wizard
By Patti L.

Harry Potter and his friends are not just characters in a series of books and films. They’re icons that make for the ideal theme for your child’s next birthday party. Check out all the Harry Potter birthday party supplies and make your child’s next celebration a wizard of an event.

Of course you’ll want to start with the Harry Potter Deluxe Party Pack. It’s filled with magical delights that meet all your serving and decoration needs. Plates, cups, napkins, and so much more are all at your wand-holding fingertips.

And, speaking of wands, you have a number of options. There’s the Harry Potter Motion-Activated Light & Sound Wand, natch. It makes eerie sounds and can be used at the party, during Halloween, anytime. There is also the hugely popular Hermione Wand. A perfect replica of the one used by that clever girl herself, you can use it stand alone or as the ideal addition to a complete Hermione costume.

Dress your birthday boy or girl in a Harry Potter Gryffindor Child Costume and you’re ready to go. Whether faced with Dementors or You-Know-Who, your little one will be the center of attention at your magical gathering. Comes with a black-hooded robe, a burgundy linter, and an authentic Gryffindor patch.

Complete the look with a Gryffindor Tie and some Harry Potter Child Glasses. These wire-rimmed glasses don’t just make your birthday guest of honor look like Harry… he’ll become the little wizard himself.

For those who prefer playing the villain, you can opt for the Lord Voldemort costume. As the most evil wizard in the world, your birthday boy can terrorize all the students in school. Or, go for the Death Eater Bellatrix for the birthday girl and watch every one run screaming… with laughter. The mask, hooded dress, and cummerbund are the perfect trio of frightening birthday party accessories.

Once everyone is dressed and ready for a scary good time, you can direct all the partygoers into the game room to open the Wizard Hat Pinata. A full 19″ high x 10″ wide x 10″ deep, it will contain a ton of wicked goodies. You can order a pinata filler kit and stuff them into the secret opening. Then, let the guest of honor pull the string and watch a magical shower of candy and toys come raining down.

Super-naturally, you’ll want to do some decorating to set the mood just right. Get a Harry Potter Hedwig the Owl or two or twelve. This 11″ Styrofoam accessory is perfect to give your home the Hogwart look. Also works great as a Halloween item to place at the front door. Add a hooting-owl soundtrack and you’ve got an authentic setting. And, don’t forget that Harry Potter Lantern. Your party will look just right thanks to this 6″ high plastic lamp that looks like the real thing.

Stock up on Harry Potter birthday party supplies for your little wizard’s next birthday, Halloween party, or ‘just because’ day, and watch a lot of eyes get as big as Hedwig’s.

ICarly Birthday Party Ideas

ICarly Birthday Party Ideas
By Crystal Mclain

When your child comes up to you and asks you for an iCarly themed birthday party, you may not know what they are talking about. You may also be a bit nervous as you wonder how you can put on an iCarly birthday party. Thankfully, these party ideas can help you figure out how to get it done, and your party guests will have a great time.

Clay Sculptures
Carly, from iCarly, has an older brother who is her guardian. He is a sculptor, so why not get the kids making something out of clay to be like her older brother? The kids can make anything they want, and you can easily bake them in the oven so the kids can take the sculptures home. Kids will have a lot of fun with this because making things out of clay is always fun.

iCarly Quiz
Want to test how much the kids know about iCarly? Just go to Wikipedia.com and find out some stuff about the show. Then, make some questions and have the kids answer the questions in a quiz show format. Give out prizes for correct answers but make sure all the kids get something for playing the game, even if they do not get a correct answer.

Serve Up Some Pie
Carly and her friends like to sit in their local pie shop and talk while they hang out. So, why not serve up some pie for the kids so they can eat the pastry of their choice? Take a quick poll from the kids to see which pie is their favorite and it will be well-worth the time because every kid loves pies.

iCarly is continuing to grow in popularity. After debuting two years ago, more and more kids are watching the show and the exploits of the characters who run their own web show. If you have kids, you can expect they may be asking you for an iCarly themed birthday party. When they do, be ready with the help of these birthday party ideas.

Advertising Slogans - Celebrate Their 150th Birthday

Advertising Slogans - Celebrate Their 150th Birthday
By Tom Sangers

It’s hard to believe, but advertising slogans are now officially 150 years old. They started out humbly, but the interest in them has grown considerably during that time. Now, almost all brands have some kind of slogan attached to them and some of them are so strongly entrenched in the human psyche that almost everyone in the world seems to know what they are. That’s a great thing for advertisers and marketers, and it’s also a great thing for the companies that are so popular and have such good sales because people remember them. When people remember a company and like its product, there’s a good chance that they will continue to make purchases from that company, and that new products that are introduced from that company - also with catchy slogans - will do well. People will at least be willing to try them.

Slogans are very important now and almost every product or company has one. When they first started, though, it was just one company putting one on a box of cold and flu medication in an effort to catch the attention of customers and potential customers.

The company was trying to set itself apart from the competitors that were offering essentially the same thing for a medication. It worked, because more and more people started buying the product even though the slogan wasn’t that good or that inspiring. The idea wasn’t that there was a great slogan attached to the product. The idea was that there was a slogan at all. A claim had been made, and it was placed right on the box for the package, so that everyone could see it. Now, 150 years later, there are slogans everywhere and claims made by all kinds of products. They continue to change and evolve, just like the products and companies that they represent, and they’ll continue to do that into the future, as well.

Celebrating the slogans and the advertising that makes such a difference is a great thing, because they’ve managed to sell millions of dollars worth of products to people all over the world during the time that they’ve been used. It’s impressive, and advertisers are always trying to come up with the next great slogan so that they can continue to move their products and companies forward. That will only get more important in the future as companies work to push their products in a market that’s struggling right now but showing signs of improvement.

Patient’s Birthday Wishes Benefit Shriners Hospitals

Patient’s Birthday Wishes Benefit Shriners Hospitals by Stacey Moore

Osteogenesis imperfecta are big words, especially for a 6-year-old. But the words are a medical term that Leigh Dittman is not only able to easily say; she knows exactly what it means.

Leigh was registered as a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa before she was even born. Her parents realized their baby would need orthopaedic care when technicians noticed Leigh’s legs were shorter than normal during one of Ellen Dittman’s sonograms. Doctors were unable to diagnose the problem before Leigh’s birth but knew it was orthopaedic-related. Ellen and her husband, David, contacted the Tampa Shriners Hospital.

When Leigh was born, she measured only 15.5 inches long, and doctors discovered she had broken five ribs and fractured a femur in utero. A few hours after her birth, Leigh was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic disorder caused by imperfectly formed bone collagen. The condition is commonly known as “brittle bone disease” and is characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause.

First Treatment At 3 Weeks Old

Leigh received her first treatment at the Tampa Shriners Hospital when she was three weeks old. She now goes in every few months to receive intravenous medicine meant to increase bone density, but Leigh usually stops by the hospital at least once a month to visit her doctors and the many friends she’s made there. “We love it,” said Ellen. “That hospital is like our second home.”

In appreciation of the loving care Leigh receives at the Tampa hospital, the Dittman family began raising money for Shriners Hospitals. “It was actually Leigh’s idea,” said Ellen. “She says Shriners helps her, so she wanted to help them.”

An Overwhelming Response

Beginning with Leigh’s fourth birthday party in 2004, the Dittmans asked that, in lieu of bringing gifts, guests donate money to Shriners Hospitals. Due to the overwhelming response from loved ones and the community, Leigh and her family decided to make it an annual fundraising event.

Approximately 450 people attended Leigh’s sixth birthday party in August. The event, which included dinner, a special video about the Tampa Shriners Hospital, a chance drawing, a silent auction and dancing, raised more than $50,000. In total, Leigh’s birthday party extravaganzas have resulted in nearly $78,000 in donations to the Tampa Shriners Hospital.

Leigh and her father, David, accept a donation to the Leigh Dittman Foundation. Leigh’s third-annual fundraising event raised more than $50,000 for the Tampa Shriners Hospital.

10 Birthday Gift Ideas That Cost Nothing

10 Birthday Gift Ideas That Cost Nothing
By Adam Driver

In the current economic climate we are all looking for ways to cut back on the outgoings whilst trying to improve the incomings! Well with most people sending 30 gifts per annum and each of those gifts costing an average of $35 it means that we are spending over $1,000 a year on this area of our budget alone. Imagine the difference it would make if you could send half of those gifts for free. This would leave you with either more money to spend on the other half or to save yourself a whopping $500 each year. Now that is a saving worth putting the effort in for. Below I have listed 10 Birthday Gift Ideas that won’t cost you a cent. (I didn’t include postage in the above example as some of the ‘Cost Nothing Gift Ideas’ may incur postage if the recipient lives to far away to personally deliver to)

1. Find a good online e-card website and send them a really nice online card. Inside enter the following message ‘For your gift this year, I have subscribed you to a Joke a Month service for the entire year. Don’t forget to check your emails on the 1st of each month!’ Set a recurring reminder on your computer to let you know that you need to email your joke. When you receive the reminder, check all those emailed jokes you have received over the last month for a suitable one and send it on. Not only does this cost you nothing but you are also give the gift of laughter which in my book is priceless.

2. If the live locally, why not organize a Birthday get together for them and a whole bunch of friends at your place. You can set it up as a total surprise without them knowing and then just invite them round on the night using some excuse such as ‘I really need you to help me tune in my TV set’ or ‘I have this strange damp patch in the bathroom I would like your opinion on’. OK, so how are you going to do it for free? Easy, all you have to do is to be organized up front. Firstly you draw a list of nibbles up (max 20 items), then you invite 20 friends assigning a nibble for each of them to bring. Along with this the odd numbered friends bring beer and the even numbered friends bring wine. Pick a few of the extremely eager friends to pop round early to help you decorate and now you have organized a great Birthday bash that will be really appreciated and you haven’t had to dip into your wallet or purse once.

3. Save all those unwanted Christmas presents you receive. Place them in a strong cardboard carton and put them somewhere safe. Once Christmas is over, take them out and assign each one to your Birthday list for the year. You will be surprised how many can be recycled. NOTE - Make sure that you don’t end up giving somebody a present of the gift that they gave you for Christmas!

4. When you are out shopping for yourself and you see something that you fancy buying but you only need one and they are doing a 2 for the price of one deal, have a quick mental scan down your Birthday list and see if there is anyone on there that you could give the second item to. Not only do you get what you want but a friend or relative also get a great gift that costs you nothing.

5. If you have a friend who loves takeouts, save a whole bunch of deals that you get delivered in the mail, cut out all the offers in the local papers, print out any deals that you can find on the internet as well. Make sure they won’t expire before the targeted Birthday! Try to get around 50 to a 100. Make sure you have an extra large Birthday card, write your message inside and pack with all the coupons and seal. When opened all the coupons will spill out creating a great surprise … and I bet they will use some of the coupons.

6. Great sources for free gifts are the hundreds of thousands of online competitions that you can enter online. Even if you don’t fancy the item yourself I bet you will no somebody that would like it. They are free to enter and don’t take that long to do and even your return on entries is 0.5%, you only need to enter a couple of hundred to get yourself a ‘Cost Nothing Birthday Gift’

7. Sign up online for free samples; you will be surprised what you can get. You could go for all make up and pamper products. Maybe get yourself 10 to 15. Decorate a smallish cardboard carton like a shoe box and place all of your freebie samples inside. Label the box with something like ‘Chloe’s Pamper Box’ and hey presto you have a great ‘Cost Nothing Birthday Present’. It also works well with a whole bunch of food samples that you can get from online shopping malls and manufacturers, these make a great mini food hamper.

8. Look through your book collection for ones that you have read, but look like they have never been opened. Alternatively check your DVD collection out for ones that show no signs of having been previously watched. They are only cluttering up the house, they make great gifts, and again, they cost you nothing to pass on. Works well with CD’s to!

9. Check through all you digital photo’s on the computer for pictures containing the Birthday boy or girl. Print them out and cut them into different shapes. Collect some rusty colored dried leaves from the back yard and build a collage of the pictures framed with the dried leaves. Using different colored pens add a witty or loving caption to each of the pictures and you have yourself a great homemade gift (always worth extra points) that costs you nothing.

10. For loved ones you cant beat a really meaningful and heart felt poem. It may take a bit of time to put together and if you are struggling for ideas you can always have a check on the internet for a little inspiration. You can put your poem straight inside the their Birthday card or you could try it with a collage as in point 9 but maybe use rose petals instead of dried leaves (you would need to dry these out by pressing them first our you will find they will go all brown and yucky!)

Well that’s the lot; Even if you don’t fancy any of the 10 ‘Cost You Nothing Birthday Gift Ideas’ I have suggested I hope that it has given you a few ideas of your own to help with keeping the outgoings down a little this year.

Host a Buzz Lightyear Birthday Party

Host a Buzz Lightyear Birthday Party
By Shannon L Weidemann

To Infinity and Beyond! Chances are if your child has ran around the house, with arms outstretched, yelling this phrase they are a big Buzz Lightyear fan. He stars in the hit movie Toy Story. Buzz is given as a gift to a little boy named Andy. He doesn’t realize he is a toy at first. Buzz believes he is a space ranger with the Intergalatic Alliance. Through a series of adventures with Andy’s other toys, he realizes he is one too. Hosting a Buzz Lightyear birthday party for your child is easy with these tips.

Buzz Lightyear uses a rocket ship to travel through outer space. You can make your party invitations by cutting out rocket ships shapes from card stock. Print the party details on one side of the rocket ordering the space ranger (party guest) to attend the birthday party. Use military time for the party time and state the party location as the mess hall.

He has a spacesuit that is able to fly in outer space for short distances too. Buzz’s spacesuit has retractable wings and rocket boosters to help him get around. Set up a craft zone so that your party guests can make their own wings. You want to have precut cardboard or paperboard available for them to decorate. Let them decorate with markers and crayons, making sure to label each child’s wings with their name. They can then fly around doing their best imitation of Buzz Lightyear.

Being a space ranger is hard work, so they will definitely need some food to recharge. Serve the birthday child’s favorite foods and give it an outer space spin. Instead of hot dogs call them ranger dogs. Doughnuts can be called the Rings of Saturn. You get the idea.

Birthday - Celebrating God’s Bounties

Birthday - Celebrating God’s Bounties
By Bhaskar Banerjee

Birthday, by Wislawa Szymborska - if one were to describe it in one word, it is simply a most exquisite poem, so full of exuberance, so full of the gifts of God’s bounty, so full of happy gaiety, so full of marvel, that it is natural for the poem to be a hearty outburst in its lyrical note and the alliterative use of language. One picture after another comes gushing forth in a stream of unrestrained thoughts. The birthday is not of one individual but the series of collective births that take place on the earth - “so much world all at once!” - as if like blurting out in exclamation, “What a tremendously hectic schedule it must bring!”

How are we, she asks, as recipients, to keep count, to categorize, to line them all up? Can we? Do we? We don’t. Why? We are insensitive probably, that’s why … she seems to be saying, to all births except our own that we know as celebration. All others simply escape our attention. So here she attempts to expand our horizons, our capacities to appreciate. Szymborska segregates the categories thus, by beginning with the immediate appeal of the alliterative words to focus our attention:

“Moraines and morays and morasses and mussels

The flame, the flamingo, the flounder, the feather”

The above lines work up a fantastic picture and each word is so meaningfully sequential: The feathers of reddish-orange colored flamingoes flying uncontrollably against the breezy winds as they feed themselves on sea organisms while walking on shallow soggy grounds, surrounded by a horde of sharp-toothed voracious eels. The “rustles and bustles” represent the hectic activities of an elaborate feast for the flamingoes and the eels celebrating the arrival of a new mass of earth with rocks and debris brought by the distant glaciers that dissolve and die out in the waters of the summer sun exhausted by the effort, and leaving behind in its wake, the birthing of a tiny island in the high seas.

The process does not stop; on this piece of newly-formed land, simultaneously, there is also the tangled growth of bushes giving birth to leaping chirping insects, creepers, creeks of rivulet streams, and with it comes in sequence the native beech trees of the temperate regions, on the glossy leaves of which the blood-sucking leeches love to cling. It just takes weeks for “so much world” to come. Continuing further, there come the bushy-tailed rodents, gorillas, and the medicinal tropical vines - the sarsaparillas.

Excited as she is with the onslaught of myriad births, and that many more are in the offing all at once, she can take no more; she can hardly keep count of this unending process, so she says, “Thanks so much, … but this excess of kindness” can be killing for me. There is a well-intended injection of witty light-hearted humor after a serious toil of studying, and on that note she asks -

“Where is the jar for this burgeoning burdock, brooks’ babble rooks’ squabble, snakes’ squiggle, abundance, and trouble?”

For the sake of categorization Wislawa uses ‘jar’, in its sense of containing, the varieties of multiplying prickly-leaved wild burdock plants, the sounds of sweet babbling of the flowing rivers, the cawing of rooks, the hissing of wriggling snakes etc. With abundance, comes also troubles, the poet seems to be brooding, and wonders how do I put a brake, probably so that they can be admired, the gold mine of wonders confusing her mind. The variety is endless - the wild cats, the songbirds, the tentacled-insects and even bacteria. Why not give dioxide to stall the flow for a while?

The trouble of abundance and her inability to cope with these, is brought out beautifully in the following lines:

I could look into pieces, but don’t have the nerve
These are products I just can’t afford, don’t deserve
Isn’t sunset a little too much for two eyes
That, who knows, may not open to see the sun rise?

Life, from the time of birth to death, is but just a five-minute stop. How can one, in the short time granted him, figure out the mysteries, his inner void’s quest? It is impossible, so the poet advises us through her own example, to draw fulfillment from whatever appears before our eyes; every single work of nature has the capacity to fill us with the wonder and awe of it all. When she passes by the poppies and the pansies, she wonders how perfect the work of creation is in the color it gives to a flower, the female reproductive part of that plant, and its fragrance.

The last lines leave us elevated with the thought: Such detail in perfection even in the smallest of work of divinity and hardly bothered whether anyone will notice or not, is the “loss” in wonderment. Nature’s mystical powers keep the cycle of births ongoing with flawless perfection, unbothered with concerns of appreciation by us humans, and that is why, a sort of “aloofly preciseness”, contented in its creation of fragility … of flowers, that is but allowed only one bloom in the morning to pale by evening.

It is a lesson in perfection that mankind, as a whole, should learn from.

Personal Training On Your Birthday?

Personal Training on Your Birthday? by Scott Hunt

We’ve all heard people jokingly say you can’t get fat on your Birthday. Great news! It’s true! Because your birthday is one day of the year, that’s a mere 0.0027% of your year or about 1/3 of a tenth of 1%. If you’ve been great for 300 or so days of the year (not 365 since nobody is perfect), you can afford to enjoy binging on your Birthday- you deserve it, just keep it to ONE day.

Don’t Gain 10 Pounds:

Like the Holiday season where so many people gain as much 10 pounds, knowing how to get back on a lower calorie weight loss diet is the hardest thing for some people to realize. Statistics show that sometimes, dieters that fall off the diet for only one day have a hard time waking up the next morning and starting over. If you are one of these people, then binging on your Birthday may not be any better than binging through Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Start Over Tomorrow:

It has been said that if you cheat on a diet, don’t use it as an excuse to go off the diet. Start each day as a new day. Weight usually comes on fairly slowly- even weight gains through the holidays take at least a week to a month to show, in some cases. This is because of the metabolism and fat storage system. The body can only absorb so many nutrients and fat from the foods you eat as they pass through the digestive system and are disposed of.

One Day Won’t Hurt:

One day of high calorie intake will not show major weight gains, no matter how much you eat and drink. It’s the habit of continuing high calorie intakes that is the problem as your metabolism takes a few days to adapt. The main thing is to start back on a lower calorie and healthier diet the next day.

A Pound of Fat is 3200 Calories:

If you eat or drink 3200 calories more than you burn, you will gain a pound. By increasing basic activities and adding an hour of walking, jogging or bicycling to your day, you can burn the extra recommended 1500 calories a week, to avoid weight gain. Of course, it is important to realize that if you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. If you burn an equal number of calories, you maintain weight and if you take in more than you burn, you will gain weight. As you can see, Holiday eaters that gain 10 pounds have eaten 32,000 more calories than they burned, over a short period time.

Birthday Binging:

Perhaps the easiest thing to incorporate into your Birthday binging is healthy, low calorie foods in the early part of the day. This will keep you from over-doing it on the higher calorie foods, drinks and cake. If you keep the 3200 calorie figure in mind, the worst than can happen is that you will gain a pound or two. Just keep in mind that it is a lot harder to come off than it is going on, so avoid over-eating as much as you can, unless you plan to have increased physical activity on your Birthday like going dancing, bowling or swimming. The important thing is to have fun and not worry about gaining a pound or two on your Birthday, as long as you wake up tomorrow with a plan to take it off!
